About Us
Free Spirit Church is an all-inclusive, ecumenical congregation which carries the basic principles of Christianity. We believe that Divine Inspiration comes in many forms and see many vehicles to enhance the human spirit and soul. From a UNIVERSAL LIFE point of view, we will enhance individual Spirituality. Form a HUMAN point of view; we will focus on care of the soul on earth through welfare of the body. From a PROTESTANT point of view, we will enhance and strengthen faith. From a CATHOLIC point of view, we will provide spiritual sacrament and enhance appreciation of the beauty of tradition. Families are always welcome, and we provide nursery and childcare, so that you can enjoy and fully appreciate the services. We also provide religious and spiritual youth education during our Sunday Services.
History
Free Spirit Interfaith Church had very humble beginnings gathering at various places throughout the Crown Point area over the years. As we continued to grow, we felt that it was important to purchase our own church that would symbolize our beliefs and serve as our home. In the spring of 2003, we purchased our current location at 701 E. Clark Street in Crown Point, Indiana. We decided to create a special name for our church – one that symbolizes who we are and what we are all about. After careful consideration we felt that Free Spirit Interfaith Church summed up our congregation. Free Spirit describes the easy-going nature of our congregation. Everyone gets along so well, and truly enjoys the spiritual fulfillment that the church offers. Interfaith became an important part of our name because we have members of our congregation with all types of religious beliefs including Protestant, Lutheran, Catholic, Baptist and more. Because we honor all religions and faiths we felt it was important to add Interfaith to our name. In June of 2003, we celebrated our pastor’s 20th year of serving as a minister during our Dedication Ceremony for the Church. This year we celebrate Reverend Doug’s 25th Jubilee anniversary and the 5th anniversary of our Dedication Celebration.
Over the years, we have continued to grow and have been slowly renovating the church. In 2007, the church received a critical renovation as we put on a new roof. Through the kindness of our congregation and several local businesses, we were able to pay for the necessary improvements to the roof. This past winter, we dedicated our reception hall to one of our congregation’s most memorable spirits – Sidney Benson. Even though, he passed away, he will always be a free spirit. We also dedicated the church’s conference room to the memory of Father Joe Bilsley because he was an inspiration and he played such an influential role for both of our ministers.
Future
As we look to the future, we are encouraged by the growth of our congregation. We continue to be blessed with numerous requests for wedding and baptismal services. And our youth education is growing each year. We hope you will come and grow with us. Our goal is to provide you with the opportunity for fellowship and spiritual enlightenment that will keep you coming back as part of our congregation for years to come.
